Heero paced in his room. The ceremony was over, and they were supposed to be at the party now. He was trying to get up his courage to see Duo again.

Time had stood still when he locked eyes with the longhaired boy across the room. He had almost forgotten how beautiful Duo was; his memories didn't compare with the reality of the violet eyes, flowing hair and lithe body that had haunted him the past year. But worst of all was the wounded look he had seen in those eyes; a look he had no doubt put there by his reprehensible behavior. Heero hoped against hope that he would have a chance to make things right. He just didn't know how.

For the first time in his life, Heero was agonizing about what to wear. He stood in front of the mirror, scrutinizing his choice of gray dress pants and a white dress shirt, no tie. It didn't seem right, somehow. Too formal, or not formal enough... Heero felt unsure of himself, not a feeling he enjoyed. Rummaging through his suitcase, Heero finally decided on an outfit.

Taking a last look in the mirror, Heero ran a hand through his unruly hair and sighed. This was it, now or never. Heero felt a strange sensation in his stomach, and sheepishly identified it as butterflies. Heero was nervous. But he was resolved.

Duo stared in the mirror, wondering what the hell he was doing there. For the tenth time, he changed his mind about going to the party. He flopped down on the bed in disgust. A whole year went by, and one look at Heero Yuy and he was turned into indecisive mush. He couldn't decide whether to act like he didn't care, wearing any old thing, or be deliberately seductive. Even if he didn't tempt Heero away from Relena, at least he could make the other boy regret his choice, if only slightly.

Duo snorted derisively. Like he had the power to make the cobalt-eyed pilot feel anything. But in the end, vanity won out, and he wanted to look the best he could.

Well, if all else failed, he was going to pretend he was having a good time.

Trowa breathed deeply, trying to calm his pounding heart; a pounding caused by the prospect of seeing his angel again. He had wanted so badly to talk to Quatre; but one look at the sweet blond and he lost all resolve. All he wanted to do was run away again, lest he lose control and hurt the smaller boy again. Why would the other boy even want to speak to him? Quatre probably despised him, and had only invited Trowa because out of propriety.

Whatever Quatre felt about him, however, Trowa's sense of justice mandated that he try to make amends, and he would do that tonight. One way or another. Even if it broke his heart to see how much Quatre despised him, he would do this. After that, it no longer mattered what happened to Trowa. He would disappear, and no one would ever see him again.

Quatre tried in vain to calm himself. His uchuu no kokoro was aching; his sense of empathy was reacting to the unsettled feelings of those around him. Not to mention his own.

Every time he thought about Trowa, his stomach churned; the tall pilot had grown even more handsome, if that were possible, and when he looked at him Quatre couldn't help remember the night he had spent in those strong arms. A night he thought of as lovemaking, but Trowa had obviously seen differently. He had to know: what had he done wrong? He decided to ask Trowa, even if it took all his courage to form the words. He would have the truth tonight.

Wufei snuggled into Zechs' strong arms, inhaling the other man's intoxicating scent. Zechs held his lover tight, knowing the feelings that seeing his old comrades stirred up were not all good.

Wufei hadn't had a chance to speak to any of the former pilots, but he had sensed the tension between them, and figured that not all had gone as they wished in the intervening year. He just wished them happiness, and hoped that maybe he could help set things right tonight. Somehow.

The Party

Duo and Quatre arrived together; by unspoken agreement, they had sought each other out on the way to the party. Scanning the room quickly, they both came to the same conclusion: neither Heero nor Trowa were there yet. Neither was sure if this was a good or a bad thing. Duo really wanted to see Heero, but he wasn't sure if he would ever be ready to actually speak to him. Quatre was similarly afraid of talking to Trowa.

Duo grabbed two glasses of champagne off of a passing tray and pressed one into Quatre's trembling hands. Draining his in one gulp, Duo made a face and sighed. The party hadn't really got off the ground yet; no one was dancing, and people were clustered in small knots around the room.

"What if he doesn't show up, Duo?" Quatre said miserably, taking small sips of the champagne. "Then I'll never know what I did!"

"He'll show up, Quatre, don't worry. Or I'll drag him back here for you," offered Duo.

Quatre almost smiled at the image. "I hope you're right."

Duo was staring at the door; therefore he was the first to see Wufei and Zechs arrive. Together. Duo pointed this out to Quatre and said, "What do you think? Are they together? That would be too weird."

Quatre studied them for a moment and said, "I think they are involved."

Duo was intrigued. "How can you tell? That empathy thing you have?"

Quatre giggled. "No, silly. They're standing too close to each other. People usually don't stand within each other's personal space unless they're intimate."

Duo looked at the two again. "You're right. They are standing awfully close together. And they do look really good together. I can just imagine them..."

"Duo!" exclaimed Quatre, blushing.

"What?" Duo tried to look innocent. "I don't have a sex life, that means I get to speculate about other people's!"

Quatre giggled, and had to admit the tall blond and the darker boy would look great together in bed.

Zechs was wearing skintight black velvet pants and a pale blue silky shirt that was open at the neck and made him look radiant. Wufei was wearing white pants and a black shirt, and his hair was loose, framing his face. They both looked completely delicious and completely, unfairly happy, in Duo's opinion.

"Hey, Quatre! Let's go over and bug them, ok?" Duo suggested evilly. But Quatre didn't answer; the small blond had gone even paler than normal and had stopped breathing.

"He's here," was all Quatre could manage to squeak. Quatre's mouth went dry and his heart pounded as he gazed upon the brown-haired boy from across the room. Trowa stood uncertainly just inside the doorway, scanning the room. Trowa wasn't exactly dressed for the party, but Quatre's body reacted to the tall boy anyway, since he was poured into skintight blue jeans and a green t-shirt that bulged over his sculpted muscles. Quatre was so confused; part of him was hurt by Trowa's disappearance, part of him was happy that Trowa was well, and another part of him was immediately aroused by the other boy's sexy presence.

Quatre stood immobilized, eyes wide. Duo said, gently, "This is it. Go talk to him."

"I... can't!" Quatre cried nervously.

"You need to," urged Duo. "And, damn, if the boy doesn't look good!"

They both looked at Trowa, and with a start Quatre realized he'd been spotted and the other boy was making his way over to them.

"Oh, god, Duo, here he comes!" squealed Quatre, barely resisting the urge to hide behind the longhaired boy. "I don't want to know what I did wrong!"

As if in slow motion, Quatre watched the love of his life, once touched, then lost, come closer, wishing he could read Trowa's impassive face.

Once Trowa had spotted Quatre across the room, he forced himself to go over to him immediately, before he lost his resolve. Studying the blond as he walked over, Trowa realized that Quatre was even more beautiful than he had remembered. Flashes of the night they had spent together came unbidden to him as he regarded the other boy. Quatre was dressed immaculately as always; his angel was dressed all in white, crisp dress pants topped with a loose tank top and a white jacket. The outfit made the blond boy look unspoiled and much too perfect for mere words. Atop all that white, Quatre's aqua eyes swam huge and luminous, staring at him and making him feel inadequate. Quatre stood next to Duo and looked apprehensive. Trowa's heart ached anew to have caused such despair to his angel's pure heart.

Walking over to the boy he had desecrated was the hardest thing he had ever done, but he forced one foot in front of the other until he stood in front of the two boys. Before either could say anything, Trowa spoke.

"Quatre, will you please let me explain my unpardonable actions? I beg your forgiveness and I understand if you want Duo to stay here with us."

Quatre's mind reeled. Of all the words he had imagined from Trowa after all this time, a plea for forgiveness wasn't one of them. As for wanting Duo to stay, Quatre was perplexed.

"Trowa, it is me who should ask your forgiveness. And why in the world would I need Duo to stay? No offense, Duo."

Duo jumped in, sensing he was out of his depth and knowing the two needed to be alone. "It's cool, guys. I'm just going to go have a chat to Zechs and Wufei. Let me know if you need me, Quatre?"

"That's fine, Duo. Thanks," Quatre said, not able to drag his eyes away from Trowa's emerald eyes.

Duo escaped, and left Quatre and Trowa staring at each other awkwardly.

Quatre swallowed. "Why, Trowa? Why did you leave me?"
